The Ultimate Piercing Guide: Everything You Need to Know

Getting piercings can be quite intimidating if you're not sure what you're getting yourself into, but don't worry! This guide is here to help you familiarize yourself with everything you need to know about getting a piercing - the before, during and after.

Before the Appointment:

When deciding on getting a new piercing, the most important thing to think about is where the piercing is going to be. There are a couple factors you should consider: the healing time, pain level and lifestyle. For example, an earlobe piercing heals the fastest and hurts the least. It also doesn’t get in the way of you living your life on a daily basis.

Next, the material and backing of the initial piercing stud earring is also important. In order to get the best results and to reduce the risk of getting infections or allergies, stick with high-quality, nickel-free metals such as 14k solid gold. These options will ensure a smooth healing process and won’t tarnish.

A suitable backing of your stud is vital - you need something that is secure but still comfortable to wear, especially when you’re sleeping. We recommend Flatback Backing for optimal comfort, its also the most ideal for more complicated locations such as tragus piercings and helix piercings.

The Appointment

Getting a piercing is quite a commitment, no matter how well prepared you are, so here are a few tips to help you get ready for your piercing appointment:

Choose a Professional Piercer: Piercings should always be done by a professional using sterilised equipment and high-quality jewelry. This ensures proper healing a reduces the risk of infecions.

Use a Needle, Not a Gun: Piercing needles are known to not only be more sterile, but it causes way less trauma to your wound and decreases healing time. We don’t recommend piercing guns.

Bring a Friend: It's more than normal to be nervous! If you feel anxious about your appointment, bring a supportive friend or family member with you to the appointment. Most piercers are okay with this.

Aftercare

The most important thing about getting a piercing is how you take care of it afterwards. Improper or lack of care could lead to infections and scarring. Here are a few good tips for taking care of a fresh piercing:

  • Always approach the wound with clean, dry hands. Spray the front and back of the site with our Sterile Sanitising Solution 2-3 times a day.

  • Alcohol slows healing, so avoid drinking before and after getting a piercing. Focus on eating well, staying hydrated, excercise and avoid smoking for faster healing.
  • Ensure that your bedding and clothes are washed and changed regularly.

  • Don't twist and twirl the piercing. Everytime the stud moves, the wound becomes irritated.
  • Try your best to avoid sleeping directly on the fresh piercing or applying pressure to it. Use a travel pillow if you really need to sleep on that side.
